Claude guest passes, explained: a free week of Pro for a friend, $10 in credits for you

Claude has a referral program built into the app, and it is not an affiliate program. Eligible Pro and Max subscribers get a small number of guest passes, each worth a free week of Claude Pro for someone new, including Claude Code, Cowork, and Claude Design. If that friend subscribes after the week, the sender gets $10 in usage credits. The screen going around, showing 'Give the gift of Claude' with 3 of 3 passes left, is the program's own screen inside Claude's desktop app.

The short version: ask a Pro or Max subscriber for a pass, sign up new to paid Claude, add a payment method, and cancel before day 7 if you do not want Pro at $20 a month. The passes do not refill, the $10 is usage credit rather than cash, and the recipient must never have held a paid Claude plan. Everything below is checked against Anthropic's own guest pass help article, with the app's own wording where the help article stays vague.

What a guest pass actually is

A guest pass is a personal referral link, not a code. There is nothing to type at checkout, and Anthropic issues no public Claude promo codes at all. The deal runs entirely through links that start with claude.ai/referral/:

  • Recipient: 7 days of full Claude Pro at no cost, including Claude Code, Cowork, and Claude Design.
  • Sender: $10 in usage credits, but only if the friend converts to a paid plan after the trial. No conversion, no credit.
  • Pass count: the app shows 3 passes per eligible account (3 of 3 left in the screenshot), and used or expired passes do not refill.
  • No cash anywhere: passes have no cash value, cannot be transferred, and the $10 is overage usage credit on the sender's account, not a payout.
  • Not an affiliate program: there is no public affiliate signup and no commission. Anthropic's partner referral form is a separate business route.

How to send one, and where to find yours

Passes only appear if your account is eligible, and Anthropic notifies eligible subscribers when they start a Claude Code session, a Cowork task, or a Claude Design session. If you see nothing, your account does not hold passes yet.

  1. In Claude Code, type /passes. Eligible accounts see their pass cards, each with its own claude.ai/referral link.
  2. In the Claude desktop app, open Settings, then the Cowork tab, where the 'Give the gift of Claude' screen shows how many passes are left.
  3. The same passes appear in Claude Design settings. Every surface shows the same links.
  4. Copy one link per friend and send it. If you share with more friends than you have passes, redemption is first-come, first-served.
  5. Track status in your referral dashboard: how many passes are left, which were redeemed, and which converted.

What your friend gets, and what it costs them

The week itself is genuinely full Pro, not a limited demo. The catch is entirely in what happens on day 7:

StepWhat happensWatch out
SignupNew account, never held a paid Claude planPrevious Pro or Max subscribers cannot redeem a pass
Payment methodRequired at signup, $0 charged for the 7 daysHave a card ready even though the week is free

The fine print that matters

Five details decide whether this deal is good or a trap, and all five come from Anthropic's own pages:

  • The $10 is what the app shows today. The help article only promises 'a specified amount' of overage credits, so the amount can vary by account or over time.
  • Credits expire one year from issuance, and they become void if the referrer downgrades to the Free tier.
  • Passes expire or can be withdrawn, and once all are redeemed or expired, no new passes appear.
  • A link shared publicly can be claimed by anyone, and public links usually go within minutes.
  • Only trust links starting with claude.ai/referral/. Never pay anyone for a pass, and never enter Claude credentials anywhere but claude.ai.

How to get a pass if you do not know a subscriber

The honest answer: you need a subscriber, and there is no public signup that hands you a pass. What works, in order:

  • Ask a friend or colleague on Pro or Max. Since Pro accounts are now eligible too, far more people hold passes than when the program was Max-only.
  • Community boards list spare passes, but they are claimed fast and some exist to harvest clicks or logins. Treat any board as untrusted until the link itself checks out on claude.ai.
  • If no pass is available, the free plan is the fallback, and our free AI tools with no credit card guide covers routes that need no card at all.
  • Students should check the student roundup first: a school plan or education route can beat a 7-day trial.

Verdict: worth it, with one calendar reminder

For the recipient, this is the best official way to try paid Claude: a full week of Pro, Code, Cowork, and Design, with the only cost being a payment method on file and a cancellation if you walk away. For the sender, three conversions are $30 in usage credits for doing nothing but sharing links. The whole deal stands or falls on one habit: set a reminder before day 7, because the auto-conversion to $20 a month is the only way this free week costs money.

Like VEED and Higgsfield, Claude's best discount is a link, not a code, which is exactly why code aggregators list it badly. Our promo code verification guide explains why referral routes beat code lists, and why a masked code with no test date should be treated as no code at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Claude guest pass an affiliate program?

No. There is no affiliate signup, no commission, and no cash. It is a referral program: the sender earns $10 in overage usage credits only when a referred friend becomes a paying subscriber. Anthropic's separate partner referral form is for businesses introducing companies, not individuals.

How many guest passes do you get?

The app shows 3 passes for an eligible account, and reports say they do not refill once used or expired. Anthropic's help article only says a 'limited number,' so treat 3 as what eligible accounts currently see, not a guaranteed quota.

Does the friend need a credit card for a free week?

Yes. Anthropic requires payment information at signup, but charges nothing unless the trial converts. Cancel before day 7 and the week costs nothing.

What happens if my friend does not subscribe?

Nothing, for either side. The friend's account returns to the free plan, and the sender gets no credit. The $10 triggers only on conversion to a paid plan.

Can I buy or sell a guest pass?

No. Passes have no cash value and are non-transferable under Anthropic's terms. Never pay for one, and only trust links starting with claude.ai/referral/.

Do the $10 credits expire?

Yes, one year from issuance, and they become void if the referrer downgrades to the Free tier.
