Grok referral program, explained: 2 free weeks of Premium for a friend, a usage reset for you
Grok now runs a referral program in the same shape as Claude's guest passes, but the rewards are different. A friend gets a 2-week free trial of Grok Premium, twice Claude's week, and the referrer gets a free usage reset for each friend who becomes a paying subscriber, instead of Claude's $10 in usage credits. The program is documented on xAI's own referral program docs, updated October 23, 2026, and your link lives at grok.com/dashboard/referrals.
The short version: you must be a paid Premium, Super, or Ultra subscriber on The X Subscription, based in the US, and at least 7 days past checkout to send invites. Your friend must be new to Grok, anywhere except China, and must enter a card to start the trial. The reset is not instant: it shows as pending when your friend subscribes and lands 7 days after their payment is received. Everything below is checked against xAI's docs, with the differences from Claude called out where they matter.
What the Grok referral program actually gives
One link, two sides, and the referrer's side pays out later than most people expect:
- Friend: a 2-week free trial of Grok Premium, with a reminder 7 days before the first charge so there is time to cancel.
- You: one free usage reset for each friend who becomes a paid subscriber. No conversion, no reward.
- Timing: the reward shows as pending when your friend subscribes, then is added to your account 7 days after their payment is received.
- Validity: each usage reset is valid for 6 months after it is added. Track the date, because an unused reset expires.
- No cash anywhere: referral rewards have no cash value, and if your friend's payment is refunded or disputed, the pending reward is removed.
Who can send, and who can receive
Eligibility is stricter on the sender's side than on the friend's side, and the US rule is the one that catches people out:
| Side | Must have | Excluded |
|---|---|---|
| Referrer | Paid Premium, Super, or Ultra on The X Subscription; based in the US; at least 7 days since checkout | Plus and Team plans cannot refer; legacy Cursor and SuperGrok plans cannot refer until switched to Premium, Super, or Ultra |
| Friend | New to Grok; any country except China; eligible email address; credit card at checkout | Existing Grok users; in-app purchases through Apple or Google are not part of the program |
How to send your link
Three places show the same referral link, and it can be shared anywhere, including X and Slack:
- Grok Bot on mobile: tap the gift icon in the top right of any chat.
- Grok Bot on desktop: click the gift icon in the bottom left, next to Connect apps.
- On the web: go to grok.com/dashboard/referrals and copy your link.
- Send it to a friend. They open the link, sign up, enter a card, and are prompted to download the Grok Bot app to start the trial.
- Watch your referral dashboard: the reward shows as pending on conversion and is added 7 days after payment.
The fine print that matters
Five details decide whether this deal is good or a trap, and all five come from xAI's own docs:
- A card is required to start the trial, but the friend gets a reminder 7 days before the first charge. Cancel inside the 2 weeks to pay nothing.
- The reward only triggers on conversion. If your friend cancels before the trial ends, no reward is issued at all.
- In-app purchases through Apple or Google are excluded. Your friend must start the trial from your referral link and enter a card at checkout.
- The program can change, pause, or end at any time, so a link that works today is not a permanent offer.
- Unlike Claude, xAI's docs state no pass limit. Do not assume unlimited invites either: the docs are silent on a cap, so treat the limit as unconfirmed.
Grok vs Claude: same shape, different rewards
The two programs look alike from the outside, but every number differs. Here is the honest comparison:
| Grok referral | Claude guest pass | |
|---|---|---|
| Friend's trial | 2 weeks of Premium | 1 week of Pro |
| Referrer's reward | One usage reset per conversion | $10 in usage credits per conversion |
| Reward timing | Pending on conversion, added 7 days after payment | On conversion (amount shown in app) |
| Reward expiry | Reset valid 6 months | Credits expire after 1 year |
| Referrer geography | Must be based in the US | No geography rule stated |
| Pass limit | None stated in the docs | 3 passes, no refill |
| Recipient rule | New to Grok | New to paid Claude plans |
Verdict: the longer trial wins, the reset suits heavy users
For the friend, Grok's deal is the better trial on paper: two weeks instead of one, with a 7-day-before-charge reminder that Claude's pass does not promise in writing. For the referrer, the value depends on how you use Grok. A usage reset is worth the most to someone who regularly hits usage caps; it is worth little to a light user who never runs out. Claude's $10 in credits is the more flexible reward, but Grok's trial is the longer test drive.

Grok Referral Program: 2 Weeks of Premium Free + a Usage ResetFrequently asked questions
How long is the Grok Premium referral trial?
Two weeks. Your friend gets a 2-week free trial of Premium, with a reminder 7 days before the first charge. A credit card is required to start the trial.
What exactly is a usage reset?
A reset of your Grok usage allowance, granted for each referred friend who becomes a paying subscriber. It shows as pending on conversion, is added 7 days after your friend's payment is received, and is valid for 6 months after it is added.
Do I need to be in the US to refer friends to Grok?
Yes, to refer. The referrer must be based in the US, on a paid Premium, Super, or Ultra plan, and at least 7 days past checkout. Friends can join from any country except China.
Can Plus or Team subscribers refer friends?
Not at this time. Only Premium, Super, and Ultra plans on The X Subscription can refer. Legacy Cursor and SuperGrok plans cannot refer until switched to one of those plans.
What happens if my friend cancels before the trial ends?
No reward is issued. You receive a usage reset only when a friend you invited becomes a paid subscriber, and a refunded or disputed payment removes a pending reward.
Do Grok referral rewards expire?
Yes. Each usage reset is valid for 6 months after it is added to your account.
